Abstract

A method of forming an air-tight seal between two pieces of glass is described. It comprises the steps of: (a) introducing a layer of indium or indium alloy between opposing surfaces of the glass pieces; and (b) heating the indium or indium alloy layers and the glass pieces, preferably under vacuum, to a temperature, generally around or below 220 °C, to melt the layers to form the seal between the pieces. The method is suitable to form a relatively small air-type seal between two glass panes or sheets, and is particularly suitable for the formation of evacuated double glazing units. Optionally, an additional metal layer is located between the indium or indium alloy layers.
L'invention concerne un procédé de formation d'un joint hermétique entre deux bouts de verre. Le procédé consiste en ce qui suit: (a) introduire une couche d'indium ou d'alliage d'indium entre les surfaces opposées des bouts de verre et (b) chauffer les couches d'indium ou d'alliage d'indium ainsi que les bouts de verre, de préférence sous vide, à une température plus ou moins égale ou inférieure à 220 °C afin de mettre en fusion les couches pour qu'elles forment un joint entre les bouts de verre. Ce procédé convient pour former un joint hermétique relativement compact entre deux panneaux ou feuilles de verre et tout particulièrement pour former des doubles vitrages sous vide. On peut éventuellement placer une couche de métal supplémentaire entre les couches d'indium ou d'alliage d'indium.
